These were the most popular Hungarian tourist destinations of the past decade
Based on the data of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office, Budapest and the cities with thermal spas were the most visited settlements in the last decade. Besides Budapest, Hungarian tourists spent the most nights in Hajdúszoboszló, and Hévíz was the most popular destination of international tourists.
Since 2008, the accommodations located in the Hungarian capital experienced a rise of 4.6 million in the number of reservations. In 2019, this number exceeded 10.7 million nights, Infostart reported.
Hungary may lack sea access, but the country has its own brand of water wealth: it is abundant in thermal water springs, more than 1,300 of them, with 123 in Budapest alone. Spa towns like Hévíz, Hajdúszoboszló, Bük, Zalakaros, and Sárvár have been among the 10 most visited settlements every year.

Hévíz is located near Europe’s largest thermal lake, and the spa town was voted the twelfth best place to visit in the European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) ranking in 2020. The Hungarian Central Statistical Office highlighted that
besides Budapest, Hévíz is the only settlement in Hungary where the number of nights spent at commercial accommodations has consistently exceeded 1 million per year since 2016.
Balatonfüred was also among the most attractive destinations; since 2008, the number of reservations has increased by a quarter, and in 2019, it approached 734,000. Twelve years ago, the city was dominantly visited by international tourists, but this trend changed in the last few years. In 2019, two-thirds of the guests of commercial accommodations were Hungarian.
The most popular destination on the southern shore of Lake Balaton was unquestionably Siófok. Considering domestic tourism, “the capital of Lake Balaton” has been among the top 6 settlements every year since 2008.
